First Grade
The first grade curriculum emphasizes listening while
others are speaking, stopping to think, and knowing
the difference between times for work and times for
play in a learning community. In first grade the specific
skills introduced include empathy training, identification
of feelings, appreciating similarities and differences,
predicting feelings, communicating feelings, interpersonal
problem solving, identifying the problem, choosing a
solution, ignoring distractions, interrupting politely,
dealing with wanting something that isn’t yours,
anger management, anger triggers, calming down, reflecting,
keeping out of a fight, dealing with name-calling and
teasing.

Second Grade
The second grade personal and social development curriculum
focuses on developing responsibility and group cooperation,
including others, taking turns and respecting people
and property. The specific skills taught in first grade
are reviewed. New skills are introduced including preferences,
cause and effect, intentions, fairness, asking for help
in a positive way, joining in at the right time, playing
a game, asking permission, apologizing, dealing with
criticism, dealing with being left out, and accepting
consequences.

Third Grade
Third graders learn to resolve conflicts with “I”
messages and to recognize and appreciate the feelings
of others. The personal and social development skills
taught in the first and second grade are reviewed.
New skills introduced include how to deal with conflicting
feelings, active listening, expressing concern, accepting
differences, making conversation, dealing with peer
pressure, resisting the temptation to steal, resisting
the impulse to lie, dealing with disappointment, dealing
with an accusation, making a complaint, dealing with
how to play competitive games, and sportsmanship.

Fourth
Grade
In fourth grade the personal and social skill curriculum
places an emphasis on respect for oneself and others,
tolerance, and responsibility for self and one’s
actions, personal property, and assignments/homework.
Previous skills are reviewed and some are reintroduced
at developmentally appropriate levels, including empathy
training, identifying feelings, appreciation of similarities
and differences, predicting feelings, communicating
feelings, interpersonal problem solving, identifying
the problem, choosing a solution, ignoring distractions,
interrupting politely, dealing with wanting something
that isn’t yours, anger triggers, anger management,
and reflection. Included in the new social and personal
skills introduced are dealing with conflicting feelings,
preferences, perceptions, recognizing impulses, keeping
a promise, giving and receiving compliments, making
conversation, dealing with fear, taking responsibility
for actions, relaxation, self-talk, and dealing with
put-downs, criticism, and with being excluded.

Fifth Grade
Fifth graders focus on demonstrating cooperation and
appreciating one’s own qualities and contributions.
Previous social and personal development skills are
reviewed and some reintroduced at developmentally appropriate
levels. These include cause and effect, intentions,
fairness, accepting consequences, active listening,
expressing concern, accepting differences, and resisting
the impulse to lie. New skills are introduced for dealing
with peer pressure, gossip, frustration, and accusations,
resisting the temptation to cheat, keeping out or a
fight, making and responding to a complaint, and goal
setting.
