The computer lab program is designed to
develop lifelong users of technology. Students learn
to use computers as a tool. The program attempts to provide
a seamless integration of technology with the classroom
curriculum. Specifically, the following skills are taught:
general computer knowledge, keyboarding, word processing,
information literacy, presentation skills, and computer
lab etiquette.

Students in grades
1-5 visit the lab once a week. Kindergartners come in
smaller groups every other week. The computer classes
begin with a mini lesson on either a skill or with a
program that the students are learning in order
to further their classroom skills and experiences.
After the short lesson, the students work individually
or in
small groups at a computer. There are 20 student computers
(eMacs) available and one color printer to serve the
students’ needs. In the classrooms there are
computers available and students save their work to
the network server so that they can access it from
any computer on campus. In the lab classroom the students
work on CD-ROMS, programs
from our server, or the Internet.

The older students
do research assigned by their classroom teacher.
The younger students do skill
work and projects that coordinate with their curriculum.

Monthly planning meetings of the lab teacher,
the library/media specialist, and the grade level teachers
promote a smooth, useful and appropriate blend of the technology
and classroom curricula. A sampling of student experiences
includes:
- Locating and identifying information resources from the Internet
- Pursuing research projects
- Designing and formatting documents, letters, reports, etc.
- Learning to differentiate between applications
- Choosing an appropriate application for the
task
- Being familiar with and utilizing computer
tools and functions efficiently
- Troubleshooting, seeking assistance when necessary, and helping others
- Learning and practicing keyboard skills
- Integrating acquired technology expertise with classroom and homework
assignments
