Survey Finds Positive Attitudes, Responsible Decision Making, and Healthy Behaviors
Freedom from Chemical Dependency Education Services Finds Good News at RHSM
Middle School and Upper School parents attended evening meetings this week to learn the results of the anonymous on-line drug and alcohol survey their students took last October. The school asked Freedom From Chemical Dependency (FCD), an organization that has worked with the school to educate its students about drug and alcohol issues for the past decade, to administer the survey with the goal of helping our young people make safe, responsible, and healthy decisions.
While no school, including RHSM, is completely free of drugs and alcohol problems, according to FCD, "The findings suggest that the vast majority of RHSM students hold positive attitudes, engage in responsible decision making, and strive towards healthy behaviors."
The report continues, "One of the most striking findings is the extent to which students misperceive the behaviors and attitudes of their schoolmates. And, if students are doing so, one must wonder whether the adults in the community are likewise overestimating use, and underestimating healthy attitudes and behaviors." Correcting such mistaken normative beliefs can be a significant step in reducing what alcohol or drug use there is at our school. Our students' survey responses were compared to national and FCD data benchmarks. No statistics on drug and alcohol use for middle or high school students exist at the state level. But, the 365 RHSM students who responded to the on-line survey and FCD's analysis provide us with valuable information to guide our future efforts to limit and prevent drug and alcohol use and abuse. In conclusion, the FCD report states, "RHSM has much to be proud of in the school climate it has created. The data suggests that students themselves represent one of the most significant assets available for maintaining and strengthening the health of the school community." If you want to know more about the FCD findings, please contact Head of School Alan Sparrow, Middle School Principal Stephen Bennhoff, Middle School Emotional Support Counselor Amanda Wissler, Upper School Principal Lee Thomsen, or Upper School Emotional Support Counselor Diane Guido.

refugee stories and perspectives
by Liz Paige, Director of Service Learning
As our seventh and tenth graders study about Africa's history and current refugee crises, we are sponsoring a brown bag lunch series in the Lincoln cafeteria focused on African refugees and their stories.
Mapendo is the Swahili word for "great love." Come hear the "great love" and respect that those who work with refugees have for those they assist and the "great love" that refugees have for the chance to start anew in Utah while maintaining their cultural identity.
All sessions are in the Lincoln Campus Library from 12:00-12:40 p.m. Note: We hope to have one or two more sessions the week of April 28, so stay posted!

If You Build It They Will Come
What's Up with Construction at the McCarthey Campus?
When we built the McCarthey Campus we knew that someday we'd have to build onto the field house, adding additional office and conference rooms. As you've noticed, construction has begun in earnest and will be completed by the beginning of school next year.

Library Matters
by Becky Hall, Steiner Library Media Specialist
Parents often ask me about books for their children. Frequently I field questions related to books for boys. The typical conversation goes like this:
"Becky, can you help me find a book my son will read. Getting him to read is like pulling teeth and he has a book report due next week." We converse about his likes and dislikes, hobbies, interests, favorite books and then the parent, usually mom, gets to the point. "Johnny just doesn't like to read. Everything I give him he hates. All my favorite books from childhood he rejects. My daughter loved those books. I don't know what to do." Now we have hit on the problem. Many boys learn differently from girls. Their brains even look different (PET scans and MRI's demonstrate that) and they develop differently. Why shouldn't they read differently? Some parents have even claimed that their boys do not read. This is far from the truth, but they may not be reading novels. A lot of our male readers gravitate toward nonfiction, often with a great passion. They read magazines and newspapers more than many of our girls. Often they like action and mysteries and sports books. The new graphic novels which adults might call comic books are very popular with many of the boys. They love to "read" the pictures and often do not like long descriptions. Even in class we see they react differently to the same books. In a discussion a girl may go on forever about why she liked the book and how it made her feel. A boy wants to tell you what he would have DONE in that situation. Even while boys are reading, they may look different. A girl might curl up in a cozy corner with a blanket while a boy might wiggle and get a drink and go to the restroom. He might flip a few pages, going forward and back. Please don't think he isn't reading though. He just has to move his body more. So yes, there are boys who do not like to read. But again, yes they will. It may just be that we have not put the right book in their hands. It is my favorite part of the job as RHSM library media specialist- to match a good book with a reader. So if you are in doubt about what to recommend, send your boy OR girl over to the Steiner Library and I will do my best to connect him or her with something good to read.
DISCLAIMER: please know that there are girls who read like this also. I do not for a moment want anyone to think that I assume all children fit a mold. I am merely attempting to help people see a broader spectrum when they imagine a reader.

RHSM Offers Free Shuttle:
Did you know that RHSM offers a free shuttle from McCarthey to Lincoln Street campuses? In the morning riders need to be at the bus stop at either campus by 8:00 a.m. In the afternoon, bus #1 leaves the Lower School at 3:25 p.m. and arrives at Lincoln Street when school gets out. In the afternoon there is also a shuttle from the Lincoln Street Campus to the lower school. Instead of driving to both campuses yourself, let our buses do it for you.

 Reader's Theater
Readers Theater is an activity in which students can enjoy the art of reading aloud while building fluency. The children read directly from scripts of favorite books or plays, without props, costumes or the stress of memorizing lines. The RHSM third-grade classes enjoyed getting pointers from Margaret and Woody Crowl, both professional actors who teach and perform with RT through Utah with the Arts in Education program. "The kids enjoy learning this way,"third grade teacher Kim Hauser said, "It is a wonderful way to bring language arts and the performing arts together." Reader's Theater is part of our annual artist in residence program. View photos . . .

Photography Taught by Artist in Residence
The fourth grade Artist-in-Residence program was a huge success! Julie Shipman taught photography to the budding young artists. They started with the basics, learning compositional skills and how to "see" a great picture. They learned how to use their cameras and then downloaded the images into the iPhoto program and edited them. Finally, the images were printed and are on display in the fourth grade hallway. The photos are terrific! Great work fourth graders!

Second Grade Snowboarder Competes in Nationals
RHSM second grader Charles Zigliara, qualified for four separate events in the seven and under age group of the USASA (United States of America Snowboard Association.) Overall he finished the regular season with a #10 overall ranking in his age group. He is the youngest boarder on the Park City Snowboard Team.
Charles has been snowboarding since he was two years old. He advanced quickly with the early training he received in the Swiss Alps. The Zigiliara family lived in Zurich, Switzerland for a few years before moving back to Salt Lake in 2006.
At Nationals, Charles finished 16th in Slopestyle, 13th in Boardercross, 6th in Slalom and finished 9th overall in Giant Slalom. Overall he finished the regular season with a #10 overall ranking in his age group. They also combined the two "speed" events -- Slalom and GS -- which gave Charles a combination ranking as 7th in the speed combo. Not bad for national rankings! Congratulations Charles!
Charles is a student in Marilyn Osborne's second grade class. His family expressed appreciation for her support of his training and competitive schedule.

Bridge Building - A Smashing Success
On March 10 a team of BYU civil engineers once again set up their "crusher" in the middle school commons and, one by one, tested the balsa wood bridges designed and built by our sixth and seventh graders. The assignment was to craft a bridge out of thin (1/10" x 1/10") sticks of balsa wood to support a "load" applied by five pistons pushing on the top of the structure. The total mass of the bridge was limited to fifty grams (less than two ounces). Each bridge's load was divided by its' mass to determine a ratio representing the efficiency of the design and construction. This was part of a state-wide competition intended for high schools, but because of RHSM's commitment to and high achievement in this event, we are invited to compete each year. Our results this year were outstanding, with 66% of our bridges supporting over one thousand pounds each.
The top five bridges this year were built by:
First Place - Alexandra Wallin and Mowgs Jarman (2077 pound load, 42.22 lb/g ratio) Second Place - Duncan Flint and Alex Lanchbury (1947 pound load, 41.43 lb/g ratio) Third Place - McKarah Dreyfous and Mike McCarthy (1815 pound load, 41.25 lb/g ratio) Fourth Place - Mathew Jackson (1724 pound load, 40.47 lb/g ratio) Fifth Place - Joe Narus and Tanner Magelsen (1812 pound load, 39.05 lb/g ratio)

Rowmark Ski Academy Wrap Up Winter 2007-2008
 by Todd Brickson, Program Director
The Rowmark competition season is winding down and we have some very exciting news and results to share with you. We have had a great winter with a few big races still to go next week at Mammoth, California and Mt. Hood, Oregon. Several of our Rowmark athletes not mentioned below also had very successful and rewarding seasons. After all it is not as much about the results as it is about the pursuit and the learning experiences along the way.
I want to thank all of our Rowmark athletes and coaching staff for all of their tremendous effort and team work. And it won't be long now until the snow is gone and we will be outside in shorts and t-shirts beginning our conditioning program in preparation for next year!
International/National Results: Our highest level Academy racers and alumni are traveling all over North America and Europe competing at the NorAm, Europa Cup, and World Junior Championships and U.S. National Championships and we congratulate these outstanding accomplishments:

 B Team
The 2007-2008 B Team season was one for the record books. Over 600 inches of snow fell throughout the winter months highlighting our season with powder turns, big cliff jumps and challenging ski terrain. This year the team logged more days skiing the steep and deep powder in the region than gate training. But this unorthodox training method caused no let-down in the numerous awards and top finishes by the skiers on the team - Rowmark had a record number of racers qualify for the IMD invitation racers and many others skied to results that were far above their previous personal best. In addition, to many fun-filled days of racing and skiing at the mountains of Park City, Snowbird, Snowbasin, and many other ski areas in Utah and Idaho, the B Team racers as a group all showed tremendous determination, vastly improved skiing skills and an increased awareness of the importance of team building and sportsmanship.
This season, the Rowmark B Team, was fortunate to have two new additions to the coaching staff: Tyler Knibbe and Brandon Purnell. This was Tyler's first year as a full-time coach with a B Team and his love for skiing, mellow demeanor and avid listening to NPR were well appreciated by all. After having just done a post graduate year at Rowmark Ski Academy, Brandon's coaching and skiing provided a good model for all athletes on the B Team - his level of intensity and quality of skiing raised everyone's level of training and racing. As always, coach Justin Yarmark enjoyed the epic snow year and the continued growth of the B Team's love for the sport of skiing.
The number of top results for the B Team athletes were too numerous to list. However, some highlights include Hank Shipman, Adrea Lam, Tristan McKinnis, Carl Nobel, Zach Merrill, Alex Lanchbury, and Williem Griffiths all skied to top five medal finishes in South Series races. TJ Pope, Jack Veverka, and Cameron Ballard were all knocking on the medals door with finishes in the top 10. Nels Ballard, Hal Stone, Duncan Flint, and Caryln Ausbeck were all competitive - each scoring top 15 place finishes and taking risks every time they raced down the hill. And of course, Meghan Henderson showed all the boys how tough she could be by often skiing faster than everyone on powder days and taking the toughest fall of the year on the outrun of the 40M Olympic jump.
Thanks to all the athletes and parents for another great ski season. We appreciate the great commitment and effort by the parents to get their kids to training. The smiles, commitment and improvement by your children on the team makes all the countless hours of driving, early mornings and cold days worth it. We can't wait for next year - the returning skiers and new athletes are already planning for our Rowmark Jr. Team Spring and Summer camps. Have a great off-season, stay in shape and get ready for another fun-filled season in 2008-2009.

 Rowmark Junior Team
The Rowmark Jr. Team had a standout year in terms of top results and teammate respect and sportsmanship. Like other Rowmark ski teams, the Jr. Team kept busy all winter long skiing deep powder and skiing faster than any other group on the mountain. An epic snow year combined with solid race results made for one of the best ski seasons in memory. This year the team consisted of 14 RHSM students from 3rd, 4th and 5th grades. Coaches Grayson Davis and Jackie Martain both returned this season to share their love and passion for skiing and ski racing.
The Junior Team competed in a series of YSL and South Series races that ran from early January and continued on until the end of March. Every athlete on the team showed improvement throughout the year and most athletes scored top 10 place results. Top finishers in the YSL for the women were Sommer Glasgow and Lizzy Baer, who both finished top five in nearly every race this year and both earned medals at the YSL champs for top three results. The boys YSL results for the Jr. Team were nearly as impressive with Jack Shipman, Bryan Croce, and Keaton Eyring all scoring top 10 results throughout the year at at the YSL champs at Brianhead.
In the South Series racers, Sophie Turok and Tanner Riedel, consistently skied to podium finishes with Sophie scoring five podium finishes and winning the overall South Series Championship at Snowbasin and Tanner making it to the podium three times during the season. Additional strong results were put in by Jr. Team racers Max Fisher and Matt Glasgow. Each scored a top five finish as well as a number of top 10 finishes.
Thanks for a wonderful season. The Rowmark Jr. Team has continued to draw attention amongst the many ski teams in the area for a bevy of exceptional benefits - two ski passes, great training and strong, compassionate peer group. Have a great spring and summer, train hard and we'll see you at summer camp.

 Love to Ski Team
The Rowmark Love To Ski Program had its' last day of skiing on March 29, wrapping up another great season. All 28 of our skiers did a great job of learning and improving their skiing and racing skills. One of the favorite exercises was skiing on one ski, or doing the balance and absorption drill with a full cup of water. By the end of the season all of our skiers mastered the tough McConkeys trail.
Although many were away on vacation, we did have several kids travel down to the YSL Championship races in Brian Head, Utah on March 15 and 16. Those racers included: Emma Duggleby, Chris Ausbeck, Davis and Alex Kahler, Micah Lessnick, Alex and Ali Perrin, Annika Pollatsek, Will Riedel, and Jack Smith. I'd like to thank all of our parent volunteers who were a tremendous help both on the hill and off, and a big thank you to all of the Love to Ski coaches!

Rowmark Kinder Program
The Rowmark Kinder program had an epic season this year! The team was lovingly named "Rowmark Rats" and the mantra for the kinder team was, "Rowmark Rats . . . We Like Cheese!"
The kinder athletes began the season on the "First Time Lift" and quickly progressed to the top of the mountain. By the end of the season the "Rowmark Rats" were skiing all over Park City Mountain. "Rowmark Rats" were spotted skiing black diamond trails, moguls, trees, the Nastar race course and shredding up all the POWDER!
The coaches of the "Rowmark Rats" were very proud of how they skied this year. The coaches were also especially proud of how the "Rowmark Rats" were courteous and kind to everyone they encountered. |

Boys' Soccer Splits Two Games Following Spring Break
by Bobby Kennedy, Coach
After practicing once as a team in eleven days the Winged Lions faced South Summit in Kamas. Playing on a small field with an artificial turf surface made the challenge even more difficult. It was evident early in the match that the contest would be competitive and the green and white needed time to develop its' possession style of play. While the Wildcats are a much improved team, they never really mounted a serious attack and spent the majority of the time defending. On the strength of great individual efforts by Walker Adams and Jared Accettura the team boarded the bus with 2-0 victory. Two days later RHSM hosted region foe St. Joseph's, a team that won two out of three games when they met last year. From the beginning it was a game of contrasting styles, the direct play of St. Joe's and the total team soccer approach of the Winged Lions. In the first half, RHSM struggled to implement their style of play and and found themselves behind 2-0 at halftime. As the second half began it was clear that it was only a matter of time before the Winged Lions would get on the scoreboard. With fourteen minutes remaining in the second half Walker Adams beat his opponent outside the penalty area and unleashed a powerful shot that beat the goalkeeper to the near post. For the remainder of the game the ball stayed in the St. Joe's half of the field but RHSM was unable to covert any chances. Fortunately, it is early in region play and the two teams will square off again in a few weeks.
The junior varsity program competed against the same two opponents, posting a 2-0 record for the week following Spring Break. Team leaders Jae Gal and Arsene Gery have combined on several occasions to find the back of the net. Solid team defense combined with some impressive goalkeeping by Tim Bohnsack has the team allowing less than a goal per game. The effects of the break are slowly drifting away and both teams are poised to be at the top of the region before too long. Hopefully you can find your way to Sunnyside Park and catch a match.

Snowball Softball
RHSM Softball team has been fortunate in dodging snowflakes and getting in their scheduled games. The Lions played the North Summit Braves on Wednesday, March 26th at Sunnyside field. The team came back after a long spring break and were defeated by the Braves in five innings. On Friday, March 28th, the Lions bounced back hosting the Duchesne Eagles in a hard fought game prevailing 17-15. The teams exchanged leads three times in the game with RHSM finally earning the win. Alexis Shimada struck out five and hit what would have been a true homerun but slipped on a slippery base going around third. She ended up with a triple in the sixth inning driving in two runs. Paige Masuda went four for four at the plate, four stolen bases, and had eight putouts in the field. Other hitters such as Danielle Therson, Kanika Tua'one, and Erin Armentrout added 14 hits collectively in the win. This team collectively has a great attitude and the girls are working very hard in practice.
