Three, Two, One, Blast Off!
by Chelsea Thornton, Kindergarten Teacher
Early this Spring, Kindergarten began its study of space. With the help of Geoff and Alex Kahler, Lonnie and Chelsea's class built and launched a class rocket. Each child enthusiastically placed a photo of themself on the side of the rocket so that they could ride into space! When the rocket was completed the children named it "Kindergarten Launch". After a few scrapped missions due to inclement weather, the children participated in a successful launch on Friday, April 4.
Thank you Geoff and Alex for your knowledge and help with this exciting space mission!

Host Families Needed!
The Upper School is looking for families who are interested in hosting a foreign exchange student or Rowmark Ski Academy student for the 2008-09 school year.
We generally have 10-15 students in need of housing every year. The host family would be compensated for room and board. The student would require their own bedroom and preferably a private bathroom as well.
Sound interesting? Please call Bonnie Martineau at 355-7494 if you're interested or need more information.

 Nature Deficit Disorder
After reading author Richard Louv's best selling nature book "Last Child in the Woods: Saving Our Children from Nature Deficit Disorder," Beginning School principal Carol Blackwell knew it was a cause she and other teachers and parents could get behind. So when the opportunity arose to attend the World Forum on Nature Education for Young Children this summer, she and 4- PreK teacher Liz Stone jumped at the chance. A wide range of professionals from six continents will gather to share ideas on how to reconnect children with nature. The Forum on Nature will have international presenters from fields such as health care, and green building and design, to speak about new ideas for collaborative ways to re-connect children with nature.

Boy, Can Girls Build Bridges!
A two-girl team once again set the school record in the Bridge Building competition this year which was judged by a team of engineers from BYU. Alexandra Wallin and Mowgs Jarman engineered a bridge that withstood a load up to 2077 pounds, which is the largest student load in the history of RHSM. The previous record was held by another all-girl team, set back in 1999 by alums Susan Sparrow and Amy Bollock with a load of 2002 pounds. Congratulations! View photos . . . |

Musicians Perfect in Region Competitions!
Upper School choir members had a clean sweep at both Solo and Ensemble Competition and Choir Competition. All achieved perfect "I" ratings and are thus eligible for State level competitions. Rotary Club Honors RHSM Students for Service
The Rotary Club of Salt Lake City has chosen the following students this year to receive the "Service Above Self" scholarships: Hanna Saltzman (first place, $2,000 scholarship), Danielle Thorsted (second place, $1,000 scholarship), and Carly Nelson (second runner-up, $500 scholarship). They attended the Rotary Luncheon on April 22 along with their parents. The other RHSM students nominated this year were: Lauren Austin, Peyton Bohnsack, Abby Bossart, Sydney Hartsell, Alex Ketchoyian, Ellie Marker and Katie Pavia.
The Rotarians who interviewed all of the students, Jay Jacobsen and Gene Banks, were very impressed by our students. In their letter to the students, they wrote, "Selecting winners from the ten excellent candidates from Rowland Hall proved difficult because of the candidates' outstanding qualifications."

Masuda Prep of the Week!
Paige Masuda, senior, was recently named a Prep Athlete of the Week by the Deseret News. Masuda has been a three-year varsity starter on the RHSM softball team, and a standout infielder for the team. One of the captains of this year's team, Paige leads the Winged Lions in stolen bases and has had a great 2008 season both offensively and defensively. Congraulations, Paige!

Boys' Soccer Hopes to Finish Strong
by Bobby Kennedy, Coach
Coming off a 1-1 tie with 3A power Waterford and defeating Wasatch Academy on their home field 4-2, the Winged Lions appear poised for a long run into the state playoffs. The team has four region games remaining in the regular season and all four opponents are extremely competitive. While the program still employs a total team soccer approach, Jared Accettura, Robbie Hull, and Walker Adams have provided most of the scoring as of late. The defense has been bolstered by a formation change that has Brendan Hovsepian-Kelly playing in front of Donny White. Goalkeeper Felipe Saltz improves with every match and he has frequently demonstrated his courage and athleticism. The team is playing an attractive and effective style of soccer that is fun to watch. Hopefully you can come support them as they finish up the regular season.

Softball in Full Swing
The RHSM softball team is currently 2-3 in Region 14 play, recently picking up wins over Duchesne and Altamont. Both games were hard-fought, with the Winged Lions battling back from behind to earn a 17-15 victory over the Eagles (Duchesne) and a 15-14 win over the Longhorns in an exciting, extra-inning contest played in less than favorable conditions at Altamont. In the Duchesne game, Paige Masuda went 4 for 4 at the plate and had 5 stolen bases. In the Altamont game, Danielle Therson blasted a home run for the Winged Lions.
The team participated in the annual Swing for Life softball tournament held April 18 at the Cottonwood Complex, a tournament held in conjunction with the fundraiser organized by head RHSM coach Kathy Howa. Much improvement in the play of the team both offensively and defensively occurred during the course of the tournament as the Winged Lions prepared for the remainder of the Region 14 season. In addition to playing four tournament games, the girls were instrumental in helping to make the Swing for Life hit-a-thon event held on Saturday, April 19 the huge success it was. Led by team captains Erin Armentrout, Paige Masuda and Danielle Therson, team members Dhemerae Ford, Grace Falkner, Hannah Grunwald, Alexis Shimada, Maddy Haslam, Leah Petracca, Adrienne Murphy, Sarah Slusher, Ediva Zanker, Floria Naumann, Hannah Midget and Vivian Huynh organized activities for the Friday night sleepover at the RHSM gym for eight teams, arose bright and early on Saturday morning to help set up and run the hit-a-thon at the Cottonwood Complex, and then helped tear everything down at the end of the day. Coaches Howa and Tomsic were very proud of the Winged Lions fundraising efforts and work ethic through the weekend--much thanks, players. With much money still to be collected, the total at the end of the day Saturday was $28,000, funds which will be donated to the Huntsman Cancer Foundation for breast cancer research. The goal for this year's fund-raiser is $50,000. To date, and not including this year's total, the fund-raiser has brought in $185,00 for breast cancer research.
The Winged Lions have six games remaining, their final home game scheduled for Monday, April 28 vs. Altamont at the Sunnyside Park field at 3:30 p.m. The coaching staff is confident that the team will qualify for the State 2A Tournament to be held at the Spanish Fork Sports Complex on Saturday, May 3. Good luck softball team!

Female Golfers Offered Competitive Sport
After many years of having to compete for a spot on the boys' golf team, female golfers in Utah have come into their own as the Utah High School Activities Association this year made the decision to sanction girls' golf as a competitive offering in the spring.
In Region 14, only four schools are fielding teams this year: RHSM, Juab, South Summit and Layton Christian Academy. The Winged Lions are represented by a single female in junior Blake Harries, who, in her first three outings of the season has posted some great results, winning individual medalist honors in each of the competitions!
RHSM coach JZ Davis is pleased with Harries' progress and feels she will be a top competitor in the State 2A tournament to be held on May 14 at Rose Park. He and Athletic Director Kendra Tomsic are hopeful that more female students at RHSM will join Blake on the team next spring.
We wish Blake well in her four remaining matches!

RHSM Track Team
The Rowland Hall-St. Mark's track team had its first competition of the season on Friday April 4th on our "home" track at East High School. Twelve schools attended the Big Red Invitational Track and Field Meet hosted by East. Our team competed against runners from: East, West, Judge, Cottonwood, Brighton, Juab, Olympus, Murray, Layton Christian, Waterford, and Highland. The day provided us with pleasant weather conditions for an early spring track meet.
Though many of our runners ran on the RHSM cross-country team last fall, for all team members this was their first high school track contest. They were encouraged by the fact that records would be set, both for the school and personal best times. I was encouraged by the fact that pre-race butterflies accompanied each and every runner as they went through their preparations to run their races - a sure sign that they cared about the outcome - and that once they had recovered from the physical stress of their race, smiles of satisfaction appeared.
Our team is considered to be a middle-distance team but we do show promise with runners that wanted to run the fast-twitch events of the 100 and 200 meter sprints and the 400 meter dash in this first competition. Chloe Joesten, Andrew Oster, Jacob Fuhrman, Jackson Hannon, Wynne Connelly and Alec Darr competed in these distances.
Coming from a cross-country background where the competitive races are 5K and 3 mile events, the following runners toed the line to try their legs and lungs against the 2-lap 800 meter race and the 4-lap 1600 meter run: Ben Florsheim, Alexander Edgley, Taylor Hollen and Max Sharp.
Following are the top times of the day in each event raced, these are now school records that I'm sure will be reset as these runners continue to race this season, improve their skills, and learn more about racing tactics and pacing.
Girl's 100 meter - Chloe Joesten - 15.04 Boy's 100 meter - Jacob Fuhrman - 13.12 Boy's 200 meter - Jacob Fuhrman - 26.77 Girl's 400 meter - Wynne Connelly - 1:25.96 Boy's 400 meter - Alec Darr - 1:04.39 Boy's 800 meter - Taylor Hollen - 2:41.81 Boy's 1600 meter - Alexander Edgley - 5:25.55

Swim Team Information for Fall
Information regarding the Upper School RHSM swim team was inadvertently omitted from the Fall Sports information in the last edition of the Emarker. The information regarding the swim team is as follows. This information can also be found on the RHSM website by logging on, clicking on "Athletics" and then clicking on Fall Sports Information.
The RHSM swim team is open to all boys and girls grades 9-12. Although swim meets do not begin until October, swim team practice will begin with an orientation meeting for all swimmers on Wednesday, September 10, at noon on the steps near the p.e. offices. Actual practices will begin on Monday, September 22 at Steiner Aquatics Center. Further information regarding the workout schedule and meets will be discussed at the September meeting. Attendance on September 10 is mandatory for ALL RHSM swimmers, even those who won't start swimming with the team until after their fall sport team participation.
The RHSM swim team has had great success over its 12 year existence, our boys' and girls' teams placing in the top eight in State 3A on an annual basis with many individual swimmers also winning medals at the Region and State meets. Current RHSM coach and alum, Sara Watchorn, as well as Sarah Goldberg and, in 2008, Connor Barton, have earned 3A Swimmer of the Year honors while swimming for RHSM. Come join a great tradition!
Questions can be directed to Coach Sara Watchorn at 953-9449 or Coach Mark Gray at 280-2519. Both coaches can also aid RHSM students who plan to swim for the Upper School team next fall to get involved on a summer swim team if they so desire.
