Rowmarkers Alice McKennis and Kiley Staples Named to World Junior Team
Sarah Getzelman, Rowmark Ski Academy, Team Manager
PARK CITY, Utah (Feb. 8) - Fourteen athletes were named Friday to compete Feb. 23-March 1 in the 2008 FIS Alpine Junior World Championships in Spain, the U.S. Ski Team announced. Junior Worlds gives developing skiers a chance to measure themselves against their age group internationally and is a vital tool in gauging how they compare.
U.S. Alpine Director Jesse Hunt said the group includes seven young men and seven young women, including defending NorAm slalom champion Kiley Staples (Park City, UT).
"We're sending a strong team to Junior Worlds and we have expectations of medals. Travis Ganong has shown his capabilities, as has Kiley Staples, who won the NorAm slalom title last season. We know they can perform," Hunt said. "This group also has some promising younger juniors getting some experience against their international peers, which is so important as they look to advance to the World Cup and beyond."

3 PreK Family Portraits
Alesa Davis, 3PreK Teacher
When the 3PreK classes returned from the winter holiday break, we encouraged them to talk about what they did with their families. Many children visited with relatives, some went away to their grandma's and grandpa's houses, and some spent quiet time home with family.
We then had the children draw a family portrait. As they were busy drawing, the teacher wrote down word for word what the children said about their families. We had some very creative works of art to display in the hall and some unforgettable stories.

Why Take On Caryl Churchill's SKRIKER?
A love of language - Churchill is a wordsmith
"We'll be under the bedrock a bye and by. We'll follow you on the dark road at nightingale blowing. Oh, but they're danger thin ice pick in your head long ago away. Blood run cold comfort me with apple pie. Roast cats alive - oh dear what can the matter horn piping down the valley wild horses couldn't drag me"
Because of the imagery
"So Lily in the pink with a finnyfanny border was talking good as gold speaking pound coins round coins pouring roaring more and more, singing thinging counting saying the alphabetter than nothing telling stories more stories boring sore throat saw no end to it"
Why try to tell a story that is so hard for the listener to follow?
Because once you are able to follow, and you find yourself in the story - Oh what a story it is, rich and wonderful - erasing time and language, as we know it. It is a cautionary tale - dark to be sure, yet full of humor. Life and theatre should not always come to us easily.
SKRIKER March 7 & 8 - 7:30 pm The Larimer Center For the Performing Arts Presented by The Upper School Conservatory

First Graders Help Save the Rain Forest
The first grade team at Rowland Hall St. Mark's school raised $354.45 to save the rain forest.
Heidi from the Nature Conservancy came on Wednesday, February 13 to collect the check and explain where the money would be going. Our funds will save seven acres of rainforest on the Osa Peninsula in Costa Rica! This place is home to over 4,000 kinds of plants, 375 kinds of birds, and more than 6,000 kinds of insects!
Good work first graders!

Middle School Spanish
The seventh grade Spanish class is working on the Spanish production of "Cinderella". It will be performed at the end of the school year and promises to be entertaining, fun (funny), and educational.
Our Service Learning Project this year was to prepare and hand out lunches for the homeless. We used imperative sentences in Spanish while preparing the lunches. A few parents were also involved in this endeavor. The seventh grade Spanish class prepared 165 lunches for the homeless. Service learning gives the teacher the opportunity to give a lesson outside of the classroom. Our project was a life lesson I hope the students will cherish as much as I will.
The eighth grade Spanish class is preparing a series of "commercials" that affect all schools, not only Rowland Hall. That is why we intend to submit our projects to the school district for consideration to be used in schools with a high Hispanic student body. Our commercials in Spanish include: "safety around school buses", "paper or plastic (how green are you?)", and others.

Learning Sustainability
The February 11th, Utah Mom's for Clean Air event at RHSM was a success. About 125 people attended, including Mayor Ralph Becker. Students representing Morningside Elementary, City Academy, and of course, RHSM were given a moment to make their own presentations.
Here's what senior Carly Nelson, a student in Rob Wilson's sustainability class had to say...
Growing up I never thought turning off the faucet while brushing my teeth was important, or turning off the light as I left my room, or that the light bulbs my family used wasted energy. This year I have learned through the Sustainability class, taught by Mr. Rob Wilson, so much about how we as individuals can have a dramatic impact on the environment.
Together the class has a can-do attitude, we want to see changes in our community. From the first day of class everyone was eager to make a difference in various subjects. The class is broken down into small groups working on a specific issue in and outside the classroom. Such projects include carpooling (discuss), converting to CFLs (discuss), recycling, eating organically-buy locally, etc.
On January 28 Rowland Hall-St. Mark's launched its No Idling campaign, which stated in RHSM contracts with bus companies that the school hires for transportation, not idle. The pick up and drop off locations in front of both campuses are "no idling" zones.
As a class we venture out into the snowy weather with "Curb Your Carbon" rearview mirror tags to remind drivers turn cars off after 10 seconds of idling. Many of the drivers were friendly and in fact thanked us; however, we did run into an occasional parent who would simply continue to idle and then speed off. As a student of Sustainability and an individual who is passionate about reducing the carbon we emit, it is disappointing to see someone not take a moment to listen. All of the projects we are involved in are simple tasks, and everyone can make these changes. They are small tasks, but they add up, and it is the small changes overtime that will quickly spread to make a difference in living a sustainable life . . .reducing carbon . . .
Up to 110 cars waiting an average nine minutes to pick up children produce approximately 215 pounds of car exhaust pollution per day. Idling for more than 10 seconds consumes more fuel than restarting your car. Youth across the nation, even the world, are beginning to take the initiative to speak out and raise awareness to protect our environment, and conserve natural resources, to promote healthier communities with clean air and a bright future.

Connor Barton, RHSM senior, was recognized as the Prep Athlete of the Week in both the Salt Lake Tribune and the Deseret News, in the Tribune on February 9 and in the Deseret News on February 12.

Sixth Grade Boys' Basketball
The sixth grade boy's basketball team had a great turnout for basketball with 18 students participating. Due to the amount of students who came out for the team we had to split the kids into two teams, a White Team and a Green Team. The boys have made a lot of improvement from the beginning of the season until now and are currently in second place in league play with our only loss coming to St. Joseph's by two points.
The Green Team is comprised of Mark Barnett, Thomas Bebbington, Malik Adams, Zeryab Sial, Ryan Collier, Nick Miller, Sam Stark-Loyning, Aidan Rasmussen, & Matt Parker. While the White Team is comprised of Caleb Chodosh, Teddy Janes, Jr. Zoutomou, Jacob Ball, Micah Willis, Lucas Brugger, Jack Jefferds-Scwiebert, Taylor Nelson, and Will Taylor.
We have a couple of games left in the regular season and then it will be time to gear up and get ready for the tournament at the end of February. We hope to win it all and bring home the trophy for all of our peers, teachers, and administrators to be proud of.

Seventh Grade Boys' Basketball
The basketball season is off to a great start for the seventh grade boys. The team earned a thrilling one-point victory over perennial rival St. Joseph's in its very first game. To make up for a shortage of regular-season games against WAC opponents, the seventh graders have embarked on an exhibition game extravaganza which includes four games the week of February 11. The team will resume conference play on February 20 against Waterford. One of the team's many mid-season highlights was a basketball clinic with refugee youth from the International Rescue Committee. Over the course of three hours on a Saturday morning, the seventh graders shared their basketball knowledge with refugee boys ages eight to 16. Said Kevin Kolopy of the experience during an on-camera interview with KSL, "I think it's a great way for [the refugees] to start living a better life." The team would like to extend a special thank you to Liz Paige for organizing the event and to Angela Tooze and Terri McCarthy for providing post-clinic refreshments. Members of this year's team include Sam Ball, Alex Beaufort, Zeke Bradley, Nate Carlisle, Joe Diehl, Nathan Florsheim, Alex Ho, Kevin Kolopy, Tanner Magelsen, Mike McCarthy, Carl Noble, Saeed Shihab, and Thomas Tooze. The team is coached by John Drake, Eldon Brough, and Conor Bentley.

Eighth Grade Boys' Basketball
The RHSM 8th grade basketball team is off and running. We have played extremely well to start the season, and the team is currently undefeated (3-0) in conference play. The players have learned several fundamental basketball skills; dribbling, passing, shooting, rebounding, and defensive positioning. They have also worked hard to learn multiple offensive and defensive sets which are utilized in our games.
Congratulations to: Jack Barnett, Jonathan Bebbington, Wain Franquelin, Ben Harries, Matt Hirning, Sam Jackson, Adam Klawe, Josh Oelsner, Elliot Abel, Parker Becket, and Dillon Becket.
