 From the Head's Office
It's been a terrific first half of the year at RHSM. Some of our debaters have already qualified for the national championships barely a third of the way into the season - an incredibly impressive accomplishment. Our varsity sports teams won three state championships last fall. Our seniors again led the state in national merit recognition and were very successful in their college early admissions, including placements at Stanford and the University of Chicago. Our Middle School boys' soccer team and our Lower School chess team have also had impressive successes.
I hope the first half of the year has been a productive, stimulating, and happy one for you and your family at the school.
For the last three years I've suggested an occasional article that parents might find interesting and thought-provoking. Linked to this E-Marker is an article entitled "Self-Theories: The Mindset of a Champion" by Stanford University Professor Carol S. Dweck. Though it is ostensibly about athletics, it is applicable to all of one's endeavors. I hope you enjoy it. For those who are interested, I will be in the parlor at the McCarthey Campus on Thursday, January 24, at 8:30 a.m., to discuss the article.
I wish you a Happy New Year.
Sincerely,

Faces & Voices of Refugee Youth
Liz Paige, Director of Service Learning
Please join us at the opening night of the Faces and Voices of Refugee Youth photo exhibit on February 5 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. The evening's program will begin in the Middle School commons with remarks from photographer Kent Miles, and Patrick Poulin, resettlement director for the Salt Lake Office of the International Rescue Committee. RHSM students will then lead visitors on guided tours of the exhibit in the George Fox Art Gallery.
Faces and Voices of Refugee Youth is an award-winning display of 30 portraits and interviews with youth who have survived unimaginable circumstances. Originally developed for 2002 cultural Olympiad, Faces and Voices of Refugee Youth focuses on refugee youth who were attending Salt Lake City schools between 2000 and 2002. The exhibit is organized into three sections-"Flight," "Haven," and "Heartache and Hope"-to reflect the fact that refugee youth have experienced three interrelated phases in their journey from their countries of origin to the United States.
"I hope the evening will be an opportunity to focus our school community on the stories and needs of the refugees in our community," explained Liz Paige, RHSM Director of Service Learning. "In addition to language skills, housing, jobs, and education, these new communities need friends. I hope by better educating ourselves with the stories of refugee youth, we will be better neighbors to and resources for the newest arrivals to our country."
The exhibit will be on display throughout February and will be used as part of the curriculum in the second, seventh, and tenth grades as well as Upper School photography classes and Spanish classes.

It's Admission Open House Time
Every year, RHSM opens its doors to parents of prospective students during its Winter Admission Open Houses. Current parents are very helpful during this admission season, helping us spread the word to neighbors, friends, and colleagues about the benefits to children of being a student at Utah's leading independent school.
This year's Winter Admission Open House schedule is:
Beginning School (2PreK-K) Thursday, January 17, 6:30 p.m. Lower School (Grades 1-5) Thursday, January 31, 6:30 p.m. Middle School (Grade 6-8) Thursday, January 24, 7:00 p.m. Upper School (Grade 9-12) Tuesday, January 29, 7:00 p.m.
"Positive word of mouth from a current parent" is the number one reason new parents cite for investigating and enrolling their child. YOU make a difference in the life and financial health of your child's school!

Young Alumni Return for Reunion
On Thursday, January 3, 2008, over 50 young alumni (classes of 2004 through 2007) gathered in the commons at the high school to catch up and share "life after RHSM" stories with friends and faculty. This reunion, as well as out of town reunions and in-town reunions at Squatters are a big hit with all our alumni. Hope you enjoy these images as much as we enjoyed visiting with our former students.

Teenagers and Risk Taking
This article from the December 18th, 2007 New York Times reconsiders how teenagers make choices in risky situations. It turns out they really are thinking about the risks, but their rationale is quite different from an adult's.
The article offers strategies for teaching teenagers how to say "No" and suggestions as to how parents can help protect teenagers from themselves.

 Thank You Holiday Give-Away Volunteers!
The 2007 Crossroads Urban Center Christmas Dinner Give-Away held in the Lincoln Campus cafeteria on December 21 distributed 1,004 holiday meals to 2,699 people. "The year's give-away went incredibly well thanks to all of our volunteers," explained Liz Paige, Director of Service Learning. "The give-away is truly an RHSM tradition. Our youngest student was Sophie Thomsen from our 3 PreK program and we again had many alumni as well as parents and grandparents of students participate."
"Many years ago, we worried about this program; we worried about where we'd have it, if we'd have enough volunteers, and if we could really pull off such a huge project," said Rachel Fischbein, Director of the Crossroads' Food Pantry. "We never worry about it anymore, thanks to RHSM!"
Many thanks to all who volunteered on the set-up and give-away days. Special thanks to this year's student organizers, seniors Ellie Marker and Katie Pavia.

Save the Date: February 11 - Utah Moms for Clean Air
Robert Wilson, Chair RHSM Sustainability Committee
Once again winter is upon us and this season so far has brought a series of wet and windy storms. But we know that when the wind stops clear skies will not last. The familiar brown haze will return and aesthetics are not the worst of our problems. Medical science has linked specific components of air pollution, ozone, and particulates among the worst, with chronic and acute respiratory and circulatory illness. Moreover, the effects of these pollutants are more severe on children because their relatively large lungs and high metabolism allow them much greater exposure than adults.
This year RHSM is making a schoolwide initiative to reduce our community's emissions output. So far:
- We have sponsored two commuter challenges with prizes and awards for those who get to school by any means except a Single-Occupancy-Vehicle.
- Salt Lake City has provided safety flags for busy intersections near our campuses.
- We are asking all commuters to our campuses to not idle while waiting to pick up or drop off students. In fact not idling may be the single most important thing we can do to protect the lungs of our students because the cloud of emissions emitted by our commuter fleet every morning and afternoon is most concentrated (and concentrated with soot, carbon monoxide, and uncombusted fuel) right over the sidewalks where our students wait.
- RHSM has partnered with others in the valley who think that we can and should breathe clean air all year long.
At 7:00 p.m,, Monday, February 11, 2008, in the McCarthy Dining Hall, Utah Moms for Clean Air will present to the RHSM community facts about air pollution, public health, and what every citizen can do to improve air quality. A general invitation is also extended to friends and neighbors and everyone who breathes. Please attend.

RHSM Athletes Recognized
Three RHSM athletes have recently received recognition for their efforts.
Phinehas Bynum has been named to the All-State Cross Country Team by the Cross Country Coaches' Association. Phinehas was a key runner on this year's varsity team, placing third at the Region 14 Meet and eleventh at the State 2A competition. Daniel Livsey, four-year member of the cross country, basketball and boys' tennis teams, has been selected by a national committee as Rowland Hall-St. Mark's School's Wendy's High School Heismann award winner in honor of his contributions in the area of scholarship, athletics, and citizenship. Ana Moser, a student from Germany who attended RHSM during the 2006-07 school year, has been named All-State in track for her State Championship performance in the 1600 meter race last spring at the State 2A meet.
Congratulations! |
 Boys' Basketball
The 2007-08 Boys Basketball pre-season has been a great success. The Sophomore/Freshman team closed out the non-region schedule with wins over Christian Heritage and Salt Lake Lutheran. They also participated in the Junior Varsity games. The Junior Varsity team had two wins over Salt Lake Lutheran and Christian Heritage, and had a close loss on the road to St. Joseph.
The Varsity team has had a very successful pre-region season, finishing with a five game winning streak. The strength of this team is their defense. They have been holding opponents under 40 points per game in the last five games. One special moment recently involved the Varsity pulling out the win against an Alumni team. That has not happened in quite a while. The region season began on Wednesday, January 9 at American Leadership. The next home game will be Friday, January 11 against North Summit. Come out and watch the Winged Lions compete in a tough Region 14!

Girls' Basketball
Rowland Hall-St. Mark's Varsity Girls' Basketball began Region 14 play on January 8th as the Lady Winged Lions hosted American Leadership Academy. The team travels to North Summit on January 10th to battle the NS Braves. Led by senior point guard Hillary Dealey-Thomason and junior guard Blake Harries, the Lady Winged Lions look forward to a challenging region hoops schedule.
Time to don your green and white and come support these outstanding athletes...the Lion's Den awaits!
