 Convergence
RHSM's Dance Company did more than dance at its aptly-titled performance Convergence last weekend. Dance, live music, DJ Dave King, and a whole lotta' learning rocked the full-house crowd.
Two key elements in developing student dancers are experimentation and collaboration, and both were in full supply on the Larimer Center stage.
Professional and student choreographers represented dance styles ranging from hard-driving hip hop to sassy en pointe ballet, demonstrating the dancers' versatility. Alumnae Mallory Rosenthal ('07), now a dance major at the University of Utah, returned to set a compelling piece for the Intermediate Upper School Dance Company. Live instrumental performances from Bret Jackson, Marcus Chen, Neel Patel, and Nathan Hall-Snyder held the audience spellbound. DJ King did an amazing job keepin' it real by transforming his laptop and sound equipment into a technological orchestra.

Faculty and Staff Give Their All!
Thank you, RHSM faculty and staff--we did it! Our participation in this year's Annual Giving Campaign is 100%. Wow! We've done it before, but it's been quite a few years. We can all be proud of this accomplishment. This speaks volumes about our commitment to and confidence in RHSM!
Thanks to our Annual Giving Chairs, Robin and Raj Puri, as well as our fabulous faculty and staff liaisons, Ryan Hoglund, Sally Wakefield, Becky Hall, Stella Restrepo, and Carol Collard, for all their efforts this year.
We're at an all-time high for Annual Giving dollars raised. However, our parent participation is a bit lower than it has been in the past at this time of year. Please consider giving a gift--no matter what the amount--because it's truly your participation that counts!

Debate Only Has Time for Winning
Mike Shackelford, Debate Coach
February is the debate team's busiest month. We competed at six tournaments in four weeks, three of which were out of state. RHSM students must have been pretty hungry because even with everything on their plate, they consistently finished off their competition. Everyone debating at Bingham, Stanford, and Berkeley finished with a winning record! Chase Burton was named First Speaker at the CPS Round Robin and Berkeley (a potentially historic feat), Jordan Friedman and Ben Florsheim finished First at Region, and "Mike n' Raj" brought home a championship trophy in JV policy debate at Stanford. With the finish line in sight, the debate team still has State and a variety of National Qualifying tournaments left to attend.
- Chase Burton and Melissa Leeworthy were Semi-finalists at the CPS Round Robin
- Andrew Arsht and Kurt Naro finished 1st in Novice Policy at Bingham
- Ben Florsheim and Jordan Friedman took 1st Place in Policy at Region
- Melissa Leeworthy and Mario Feola took 1st Place in Varsity Policy at Bingham
- Chloe Jones and Sage Chodosh took 2nd in Novice Policy and Bingham
- Michael Marquardt and Raj Patel finished 1st in JV Policy at Stanford
- Chase Burton and Melissa Leeworthy were Octa-finalists in Open Policy at Berkeley
- Sage Chodosh and Chloe Jones are the First Alternative for the NCFL National Tournament

Paul Fleishman-Newbery Medal Winner Visits RHSM
Paul Fleishman, American children's author, and winner of the 1989 Newbery Medal, visited the RHSM Middle School on February 26. Mr. Fleischman displayed a ninety-nine cent, spiral notebook filled with meticulous hand-written notes to describe his old-school approach to writing.
"You don't need anything fancy or expensive to be a writer," Fleishman told the students. His young adult novel Seedfolks has demonstrated broad appeal, serving as the inspiration for state-wide reading programs. Entire cities and towns across the nation have used its subject matter for group art projects and community gardens.
RHSM Middle School English teacher Mike Roberts and Highland High School drama teacher John Newman combined efforts to create the opportunity for students to experience one of the most recognizable and awarded Young Adult authors of our time.
In the spirit of sharing, RHSM invited other schools to attend including: Kearns-St. Ann's School, The McGillis School, and The Wasatch Community Garden. All meetings were held in the Middle School commons.

What Would You Do to Change the World?
by Kathy Adams, Staff Writer
RHSM 2nd, 3rd, and 5th grade students walked to the Fine Arts Museum at the University of Utah on Monday to hear legendary primatologist and sociologist Jane Goodall speak about her 50 years of research and experience studying chimpanzees in the Gombe National Forest in southeastern Africa.
Students watched a short film tracing Goodall's groundbreaking observations of chimpanzees which challenged the very definition of human beings. Her close attachments with the chimpanzees was entertaining and moving.
I sat next to a second grader named Julian who bounced energetically in his seat during the movie, finally turning to me and declaring, "This is great!"
The students were taught an effectively loud chimpanzee call to welcome Goodall into the room. Her characteristic shy, gentle smile belies the 73 year-old's amazing strength and purpose. Goodall told the students that because of the deforestation of the Congo, and killing of chimpanzees for "bush meat," she has changed her focus toward the preservation of chimpanzees and the environment. Goodall invited students to become part of the solution by joining her international environmental program for youth, Roots and Shoots.
"If you would like to change the world, please raise your hand," Goodall prompted the children. My second grade colleague, Julian, lifted his hand into the air and spotting his friend Caeli one row ahead excitedly asked, "Hey Caeli, what would you do to change the world?"
"I would protect the chimpanzees by not letting anyone cut down their trees," Caeli said. That's an answer Jane Goodall would be very happy to hear.

Let Levi Ride!
Olle Larsson and Todd Brickson
Last year Levi Leipheimer took Third Place in Tour de France--31 seconds behind First Place. Levi was a student/athlete of RHSM and Rowmark Ski Academy from 1990 to 1992. Last week he won his second consecutive Tour of California overall title. As premier cyclist in the nation we are looking forward to his participation in the Beijing Olympics this summer.
Levi was one of the most dedicated athletes we have had in our academy. We hope that he can continue his successful biking career against the worlds' best cyclists. In October 2007 he signed with Astana Cycling Team because his Discovery Cycling team discontinued its cycling involvement. Transferring from the Discovery team to Astana was also team director Johan Bruyneel and the Tour de France winner '07 Alberto Contador. Unexpectedly Levi's present team Astana has been rejected to participate in the 2008 Tour de France by its organizer ASO.
If you feel compelled to add your name to Levi's www.letleviride.com website that has a link to ASO, Levi and the Rowmark staff would greatly appreciate it. As of today over 50,000 have joined his cause.

The Lady Winged Lions' basketball season drew to a close at the state-qualifying tournament in Ephraim, Utah on February 14th. The RHSM team kept the number one seed Beaver team on their heels for over three quarters of play. With a three point lead and 7:20 on the clock in the fourth quarter, the Beaver team went on a 8-0 run, distancing themselves from the hard-playing Rowland Hall team.
While the season ended short of the "state" goal, the team had many triumphs to celebrate over the four-month season. Additionally, returning three players from this year's starting line-up, the Lady Winged Lions will certainly be a force in Region 14 play next year. Congratulations to the Lady Lions on a fantastic season.

Boys' Basketball
by Shawn MacQueen, Coach
The 2007-08 Boys' Basketball season was one of our most successful in recent years. The success actually began before the first game, when we formed a freshmen/sophomore team. It has been several years since we were able to include this level in our program. This young group played excellent basketball with key wins over American Leadership, North Summit, and Layton Christian. Eddie Broschinsky and Nathan Zick-Smith were named captains of this team. Other members included Corbin Christensen, Sam Parker, Robert Lainhart, Nick Bradley, Sean North, Daniel Bynum, Alex Kim, Steven McCarthy, and Daniel Christensen. Aaron Hinton coached the frosh/soph team, and was a valuable addition to the program!
The varsity team experienced a level of success that has not been seen in a number of years. Participation in the 2A Preview jump started the season with wins over region 12 champion, Millard and the state runner-up, Parowan. The region 14 season was highlighted by an upset of then #1 ranked North Summit! We finished second in region and earned the right to meet Gunnison in the first round of the playoffs. That win put the Winged Lions in the 2A state tournament! Even though our showing at state was not what we had planned for, the overtime loss to Layton Christian was one of the most exciting high school basketball games of the year. It has been difficult to say goodbye to our lone senior, Danial Livsey, but he has left a legacy of hard work and persistence. Zach Arthur and Jared Accettura were varsity captains, and showed great leadership throughout the season. They will both be honored with All-Region and All-State nominations. Jordan Knoll-Marston, Felipe Saltz, Carter Haslam, Matt Bossart, Quentin Morse, JB Park, Nic Jobs, and Gi Won also made significant contributions to the success of the team. Matt Bishop was our student assistant and provided a great deal of support to the team. We are looking forward to the future in the boys basketball program. Coach Ron Potter, Coach Aaron Hinton, and I are excited about the upcoming season. Please meet us in "The Den" next year for another season of exciting high school basketball! |

Congratulations to the 6th Grade Boys' Basketball Team--The 2008 WAC Champions!
The team - all 18 of them - had a very successful regular season with six wins and three losses (by a combined five points). They really turned up the intensity during the tournament when they won all 3 games to bring home the trophy.
In the first round of the tournament we beat Christian Heritage 36-18. In game two of the tournament we matched up against a very tough and undefeated St. Joe's team. The guys started a little sluggish and were down 12-7 at halftime before really stepping up the defensive intensity to win 28-16. In the Championship game against Layton Christian our boys controlled the tempo and the game from the opening tip - even though the score was 27-23 it wasn't that close.
Our 6th grade team was comprised of Mark Barnett, Thomas Bebbington, Malik Adams, Zeryab Sial, Ryan Collier, Nick Miller, Sam Stark-Loyning, Aidan Rasmussen, Matt Parker, Caleb Chodosh, Teddy Janes, Jr. Zoutomou, Jacob Ball, Micah Willis, Lucas Brugger, Jack Jefferds-Scwiebert, Taylor Nelson, and Will Taylor.
If you see them be sure to congratulate them on their accomplishment and remind them that dedication and teamwork does equal success! Good job guys!
We're all very proud of you! |

Seventh Grade Basketball Takes Third Place Trophy
What an exciting end to the season for the RHSM "B" Team! The team's overtime victory over Christian Heritage in the consolation game of the WAC tournament was without question its best win of the year. Not only did the players battle back to overcome a 10-point halftime deficit, they also demonstrated outstanding defensive toughness down the stretch and earned some quality baskets in overtime. The team ended the season with a 2-2 regular season record and took third place in the WAC tournament. After failing to qualify for the postseason in 2007, coming away with the third place trophy in 2008 was a great accomplishment! Members of this year's team included Sam Ball, Alex Beaufort, Zeke Bradley, Nate Carlisle, Joe Diehl, Nathan Florsheim, Alex Ho, Kevin Colopy, Tanner Magelsen, Mike McCarthy, Carl Noble, Saeed Shihab and Thomas Tooze. The team was coached by John Drake, Eldon Brough, and Conor Bentley.

Eighth Grade Boys Basketball - Second Place!
The RHSM eighth grade boys basketball team had an excellent season. The team started out by winning four straight games and finished the WAC regular season 7-2. The team earned a rematch with Waterford in the semifinals. RHSM got revenge for a last second regular season loss with a riveting 25-22 victory over Waterford to earn a spot in the championship game.
Our season came to a close with a tough loss to LCA in the championship. Congratulations to: Elliot Abel, Jack Barnett, Johnny Bebbington, Dillon Becket, Parker Becket, Wain Franquelin, Ben Harries, Matt Hirning, Sam Jackson, Adam Klawe, and Josh Oelsner on their 2nd place (out of nine) finish. Thank you RHSM parents and players for a great season!
