Does a Portrait Have to be Realistic?
RHSM fifth grade art was featured at the Phillip's Gallery in downtown Salt Lake City from April 18 through May 9.
Rowland Hall St-Mark's School fifth grade art students explore an abstract approach to creating a portrait. Students explored an imaginative twist on a traditional theme. Inspired by cubist and expressionistic styles of the artists Pablo Picasso and Willem de Kooning, young artists experimented with color, line, shape and artistic medium.
Each art piece started with students tracing one another's head and torso silhouette on a large white piece of paper. They then experimented with tracing geometric shapes with tin and plastic container forms with oil pastels. Students took the artwork further with watercolor and acrylic paint. With this multimedia they composed a unique composition of facial features and figure.
Art instructor Kathryn Czarnecki loves how each piece wonderfully expresses a student's individual visual expression of a portrait.
Many thanks to Phillip's Gallery.

 Kindergartners Save Trees
by Lonnie Bradley, Kindergarten Teacher "Can we go on a box hunt?" is a frequently asked question in Kindergarten. Despite rain, sleet, and hail, we head out to known collection sites all over campus to find items to create artwork in our classrooms. It all began as part of our Service Learning Recycling Project this year, when the three kindergartens took field trips to the Salt Lake County Landfill to experience first hand the mountains of useful items, especially paper, that Utah residents discard every day. Since then, our students have been carefully monitoring their parents and classmates to ensure that they reduce, reuse, and recycle. A second field trip to the Salt Lake Arts Center to see the San Francisco Recycles art exhibit, turned the children into avid collectors and creative artists. According to our Kindergarteners, by keeping an eye out for "good stuff" and by using a little imagination, we can create the kind of clean and beautiful world in which we all want live.

Pasa la mostaza, por favor
How are conjugating verbs and making sandwiches connected? Well, in Middle School Spanish the students are learning how to do both at the same time. Seventh and eighth grade Spanish students have been practicing command verb tenses, among others, and food and kitchen vocabulary in preparation for their service learning trip to the Good Samaritan program at the Cathedral of the Madeleine. During their 75-minute project at the Cathedral, the students make sandwiches and assemble sack lunches to be handed out to people in need of food, largely people that are homeless. All conversations during the experience are in Spanish, so students get to practice in "the real world" all that they have learned in class. Students also staff the door where people come to pick up a lunch and help organize other goods that are distributed through the Good Samaritan program. Eighth grader Johnny Bebbington reflecting on his experience wrote, "I feel great because I was helping someone less fortunate than me. I was helping the community from the bottom up. It feels way better to do it without any benefit for me, because I worked hard for the satisfaction of helping people and not for money." "It is wonderful when we can teach both the mind and the heart," said Raffa Brito Dellan, the Middle School Spanish teacher who made this service learning unit possible. The Spanish classes are collecting shampoos, conditioners, lotions and socks (of all sizes) through May 14 to donate to the Good Samaritan Program. Many thanks to the parents who helped chaperone this year's trips: Sandra Nugent, Terri McCarthy, Leslie Legge, Donna Weinholtz, Andres Molina, and RHSM alum Sam Legge '07.

RHSM Student Mobilizes Neighbors for a Cleaner Community
Just three days before Earth Day, with the help of his dad, RHSM eighth grade student David Chardack organized a neighborhood cleanup of the recreational area locally known as the 'lower bobsled,' a popular hiking/biking system of trails in the hills behind the upper Avenues neighborhood. After the winter snows had melted, David and his dad noticed the unbelievable amounts of trash, cans, bottles, and yard waste that had been dumped there. There were even mattresses, TVs, old cars and computers! This was unacceptable to them, so the cleanup was organized. Fliers were distributed to neighbors, and a website was created to document the problem ( http://web.mac.com/mchardack/Site_2/Home.html) and itemize the work to be done.
Many people responded with support for the project and 35 people showed up on the morning of April 19 for the cleanup. The Chardacks provided bagels, water and juice, as well as garbage and recycling bags. Salt Lake City Mayor Ralph Becker's office was very supportive of the project and agreed to send two dump trucks to pick up the debris collected on the Monday following the cleanup. David is also following up with signs to help prevent further dumping in this beautiful area. Way to go, David! |

MS/US Musical Performances
Rowland Hall's wind and percussion students culminated this school year's musical efforts with brilliant performances in St. Margaret's Chapel at the McCarthey Campus. The middle school musicians took the spotlight individually, performing as soloists and chamber musicians in the Beginning and Advanced Band Recitals held in April.
The final concert of the year featured the Middle and Upper School ensembles performing a variety of jazz, rock and concert band compositions. Highlights of the evening included a commanding performance of Claude Smith's Ceremonium, performed by the combined Middle School bands, a sizzling performance of Santana's "Evil Ways" played by the Advanced Band, and a tasteful rendition of Dizzy Gillespie's "A Night In Tunisia" performed by the Upper School Jazz Ensemble.
Congratulations to all of the musicians for a fun and productive year of music making.

Soccer - Common Language
Brooke Blanchard, youth program coordinator for the International Rescue Committee, was looking for something special to make a group of recently resettled refugee boys happy. She knew that soccer was the place to look and Rowland Hall's Service Learning Director Liz Paige was the one to make it happen. Ms. Paige turned to soccer coach Bobby Kennedy who hosted a clinic and scrimmage for the IRC's Youth Program and RHSM's Varsity and JV soccer teams in April. Nine refuge boys and 20 RHSM team members came to play.

¡Andale estudiantes de espanol!
Students from the Upper School Spanish II class had the opportunity to participate in a service-learning activity in April. They have been practicing their reading and speaking skills through children's books written in Spanish. The students visited Lincoln Elementary School in Salt Lake where they divided into groups and shared their stories with K-2 Latino students. We were also able to have some conversation in Spanish and do an activity together. We learned that being bi-lingual was "the thing to be!" Some of the Spanish II comments were: "I'm scared!!" "I liked it because the kids were so cute and they were helping us learn while we were helping them learn." "I think the experience was great for our Spanish practice."

The 2008 RHSM Baseball season concluded Thursday, May 1st with a snowpacked game at South Summit. Head coach Ben Voegele has described this season as one like no other. "It's was a very weird year. The weather was brutal which forced the cancellation of many games scheduled in March and early April. We've had to make those up and cram a lot of games in a very short amount of time. Because of that, this season just flew by," said Voegele. "We got off to a pretty rough start, but we've played well the last few weeks. It's a shame the season is over. Overall, our players set and broke a number of individual team records. As a team, we set a new RHSM record for steals in a season, and tied a UHSAA record for fourth best steals in a single game with 12. We did a lot right, and have a strong group of players returning next year. I hope with all the positives that came out of this season, we can add more quality players next spring. I know there are more athletes at RHSM that could really help this program get to where I would like it to go. I'm proud of what we have going, and with a few more additions, this program could really take off," stated Voegele.
Among the season highlights were Joey Polychronis' 13 strikeout pitching performance against Layton Christian Academy, Carter Haslam's leadoff home run against North Summit, Jordan Knoll-Marston and Eric Hutchinson stealing three bases each in a single game against North Summit, RHSM stealing 12 total bases against North Summit and 10 total team steals against Altamont. Yet the ultimate team highlight was getting to play a region game against Altamont at Franklin Covey Field, home of the Salt Lake Bees April 28th. "That was about as good as it gets," said Voegele. "A lot of work went into getting to play there, and I would love to see that turn into an annual game or two for this program. The players loved it, and left the field with the memory of a lifetime.

Girls' Golf Update
Junior Blake Harries represented RHSM this spring in the newly formed 2A girls' golf program. Under the tutelage of Head Coach JZ Davis, Blake won all four Region 14 matches in a convincing fashion. She represented the Winged Lions at the Region 14 Tournament on May 6 at Wasatch State Park, but results of that match were unavailable at press time.
Her performance during the season earned her a berth in the State 1A/2A/3A State Golf meet held at Rose Park on May 14 where she will compete with golfers from across the state from these three classifications. We'll keep you posted on her results.

Boys' Soccer Advances to Second Round of State Playoffs
by Bobby Kennedy, Coach
The Winged Lions faced a scrappy Beaver HS team at Sunnyside field in "winter conditions " on April 30. RHSM spent the first 30 minutes pressuring the opponents goal but time and time again shots traveled high and wide of the goal. With ten minutes remaining in the first half, Captain Robbie Hull found the back of the net on a volley from the top of the penalty area. Minutes later Jared Accettura dribbled the baseline and slotted a perfect ball for Robbie Hull to chip over the goalkeeper and into the back of the net. J.B. Park finished the scoring in the first half by beating the goalkeeper to the ball on the top of the penalty area and driving home a shot from twenty yards out. Tim Bohnsack relieved starting goalkeeper Felipe Saltz to preserve the shutout, while Arsene Gery netted his first varsity goal to complete the scoring. RHSM will face West Ridge Academy in the second round this Saturday.

State Bound for the Winged Lion Softball Team
The RHSM Softball team finished their final home stand on Monday, April 28 with a game against the Altamont Longhorns. The Lions lost to the Longhorns at the Swing for Life Tournament in the last inning, so were out to get a win on Senior Day at the park. Hitting from seniors Danielle Therson, Erin Armentrout, Kanika Tua'one, Paige Masuda, and Grace Falkner combined for nine runs in the first inning. Altamont came back with three runs in the third inning, bringing the score to 9-3. In the fourth inning, the Lions scored two more runs and then gave up three to the Longhorns. The RHSM team held their opponent in the top of the fifth and the bats came alive in the bottom of the inning with extra base hits from Dhemerae Ford, Alexis Shimada, and Kanika Tua'one. The finale came when Armentrout blasted a three run homer to the left field fence, ending the game on the ten run rule, Winged Lions victorious 17-7. This win earned RHSM a berth in the 2A State tournament held on May 3 at Spanish Fork. A win in this first round would mean a trip to the second weekend of State play in Spanish Fork on May 9 and 10. Congratulations on a great season to players Erin Armentrout, Paige Masuda, Danielle Therson, Kanika Tua'one, Grace Falkner, Dhemerae Ford, Alexis Shimada, Maddy Haslam, Leah Petracca, Hannah Grunwald, Hannah Midget, Sarah Slusher, Ediva Zanker, Adrienne Murphy, Floria Naumann, and manager Vivian Huynh.

RHSM Track
Nature, in the form of wind, became a competitor at our second and third meets of the season. With cool temperatures and strong winds many of our runners began to see that running track in Utah, regardless of the event, might just be harder than cross-country in the autumn.
Our runners competed against over thirty schools at the eighth annual Taylorsville Invitational on Saturday the 19th of April. In spite of the windy conditions Alexander Edgley ran his fastest 1600 meter yet this year in a time of 5:20. 50. In the same event sophomores Ben Florsheim and Zoey Martin-Lockhart running in their first 1600 meter races got in just under 6 and 7-minutes respectively.
On the following Wednesday the team traveled to Manti High School for a fun meet against the host school, Millard, Richfield, North Sanpete, Gunnison Valley and Juab.
This meet gave the team an opportunity to try as many events as they wanted. The most noteworthy outcome from this invitation to explore other events came with junior Chloe Joesten's running of the 300 meter hurdles. Having never practiced the hurdles she finished the race and declared at the end that she wanted more of this! Another item of interest was the javelin throwing attempts (again, never done before) by Jacob Fuhrman, Andrew Oster, Jackson Hannon and Taylor Hollen (I watched from a great distance). But ending on a more serious note, Alexander Edgley, Taylor Hollen, Ben Florsheim and Alec Darr teamed up for our team's first attempt at the 4 x 400 meter relay and ran a time of 4:26.50. Having only three women on our team but lots of desire to compete, Zoey Martin-Lockhart, Chloe Joesten and Wynne Connelly joined together to run the 4 x 400 meter relay - with Zoey leading and anchoring the relay.
Coaches and athletes alike were lighthearted on Saturday the 26th at the Morgan High School Invitational, hopeful that the fine weather conditions - something most teams had not seen on meet days this year, would bring faster times. For our team, spirits were elevated and nearly everyone bettered their previous personal records. (See some of the results below.) Our next contest will be the Region meet, May 7, at South Summit High School in Kamas.

J.V. Water Polo Quarterfinals Ends in RHSM Sudden Death Play

The combined 4-5A State JV water polo quarterfinal game was played between Murray High School and our own Steiner Team this last weekend at Park City. Steiner started with a dismal first quarter, down 4-1. The defense then got down to business, exhausting the Murray swimmers. On the offensive end, Steiner persevered led by Tristan Buhler, playing in the scoring position. The game was within our reach and then Murray scored again. It was 5-4 in the last quarter. Within the last seconds we evened up 5-5. It was a sudden death overtime. The ball was dropped midfield and Jesse Wood sprinted to make the claim. He made a short pass to the wing where Eric Albee caught the ball and sent it forward to the hole. Tristan then scored the winning goal. Steiner had won the quarterfinals. The Steiner team was then defeated by the Kearns powerhouse team in the semi-finals. Overall, our J.V. water polo team finished as one of the top four teams in the field of 18 competing at the state level. We are proud of our swimmers for a great season and their contributions to a great water polo experience. The water polo team includes swimmers from East High, Judge Memorial, Cottonwood High and Rowland Hall. Come support the Varsity State water polo swimmers this weekend at the Kearns Olympic Pool.
