 Strategic Plan Approved
We are happy to announce that on September 11 the Board of Trustees unanimously approved the adoption of the new Strategic Plan. Rowland Hall's new Foundations for Extraordinary Learning: 2008-2013 Strategic Plan possesses a balance of new ideas, best practices, and improvements to existing programs. It provides a map for navigating the most pressing issues our school is likely to face during the next five years. We have set goals and built supporting initiatives and look forward to accomplishing them together as a school community.
Extensive research differentiates this plan from our past strategic plans and provided us with a greater understanding of how our school fits into its competitive environment. It reaffirmed the strengths of our program and the commitment of the people who teach, work, and volunteer here. Statements of mission, vision, and core values have been fine-tuned and four pillars provide the base of the plan:
A Proud Tradition of Excellence, Character, and Service
Diversity of People and Thought
The Leader in Pre-College Excellence
Locally, Nationally, and Globally Connected
This plan's initiatives and strategies place Rowland Hall in its strongest strategic position to date. A published version of the Strategic Plan will be available soon and we hope you will find it compelling and well worth your support. - Bob Marquardt, Board Chair, and Alan Sparrow, Head of School

Our 2008-2009 Annual Fund Goals: $900,000 and 100% Participation from Parents, Faculty, and Staff--Your Participation in the Annual Fund is Vital!
Laurie Staton, Director of the Annual Fund
Giving to Rowland Hall's Annual Fund is an important part of our school culture-it's a way of "giving back" that directly benefits our students and faculty. Here's what the Annual Fund does for our school:
- The Annual Fund enriches our programs by supporting:
· Art and music classes · Dance and theater performances · Physical education and athletic programs · Other specialty classes for all our students
- The Annual Fund ensures faculty salaries remain competitive with public school compensation and supports teachers' training, allowing us to retain our outstanding faculty members.
- The Annual Fund helps us keep tuition costs down so our student body can remain inclusive.
- The Annual Fund balances Rowland Hall's budget. Tuition only covers about 80% of the actual costs of educating a child, and the Annual Fund helps make up the difference.
Your participation in the Annual Fund is vital!

Support Family Literacy and
Assist a Less Fortunate School Community
Rowland Hall hosts an annual book fair to support the McCarthey Campus Steiner Library. It highlights our love of books and encourages our children to read. This year, the RHSM Book Fair will be held from Wednesday, October 15th through Friday, October 17th.
Prior to and during the Rowland Hall Book Fair, we will be collecting gently used books for a less fortunate community. Beginning Wednesday, October 1st RHSM will collect books to donate to Monroe Elementary School in West Valley City.
Monroe is an at-risk Title I school with a population of 744 students and 120 preschool students. Sixty-five percent of Monroe students are English Language Learners. Twenty-one different languages are spoken at the school. Eighty percent of the students at Monroe qualify for free or reduced price lunches. Monroe Elementary needs books for their library and for their families. The books collected by Rowland Hall will be used to support families who are learning English. Not only will the children benefit from your donations, but the parents will as well. These books will be sent home with the children so that parents may also learn English. All levels of books are needed-pre-school, elementary, and junior high school books are all appropriate. Even some adult books would be appreciated.
Donation boxes will be available at each of four locations: the beginning, lower, middle and upper schools, through the closing day of the book fair. A donation box will also be available in front of the library on the McCarthey Campus. As a special incentive, on October 9th, Home & School will have a limited number of free book bags to give to the first donors bringing ten or more books to the four primary locations.
Let's see if we can send a book home with every child from Monroe!

 New Routines
As our 4 Prek team greets new students each August, we love to witness the enthusiasm and joy that young children bring to our classrooms and our lives. Meeting new friends, greeting "old" friends, and discovering the joys of running and playing chase on the bigger playground are only surpassed by the interest in new materials in the classroom.
Our favorite feedback from parents at the start of each year is hearing from those students who wake up on Saturday and wish it was a school day! Here are a few photos of activities during the first two weeks in Liz Stone and Becca Roper's class.

Cycle Safely
By Margaret Rose, Lower School Assistant Principal
It is an absolute joy to see so many children and parents riding bicycles to school each day. It's great exercise for all involved, cuts down on parking congestion, and certainly benefits our environment and air quality. We're working to address the need for additional bike racks at the Lower School. Please be patient as we arrive at the best solution.
Of paramount importance to the school, and certainly for parents, is the safety of children. Following are some guidelines to follow as you ride with your child, and some rules of Rowland Hall:
1. Wear a helmet. 2. Ride on the right, WITH the flow of traffic. 3. Obey all traffic signs and signals, as if you were a car. 4. *Do not ride on sidewalks (unless you're under ten years old). 5. WALK across crosswalks and driveways. Especially walk across the Pingree and Rowland Hall driveways on the south side of campus. 6. Once on school property, please walk your bike to the bike rack. 7. Secure your bike to the rack.
*The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration recommends that the safest place for cyclists to ride are on roads and streets. However, for children under the age of ten, it is recommended that they ride on sidewalks, as they have not yet developed the judgment and skills necessary to manage cars. Think of your child's bike as their first vehicle and not as a toy. If you'd like more information, the League of American Bicyclists offers more information about riding with your child, safety, skill development, cycling education, and more at www.bikeleague.org.
Before the snow hits, enjoy the beautiful fall weather and the experience of riding with your child, and we'll see you on the road! |

Rowland Hall X-C
The Rowland Hall harriers are off to a strong start this season! Our first cross-country meet was the Grass Relays in American Fork on August 30th. Rowland Hall was the only school representing the 2A Division and ran well against 3A, 4A and 5A teams. Andy and Johnny Gilbert led the JV boys' team on this two-mile course with times of 12:52 and 12:56 respectively. Brendan Hovsepian-Kelly and Sam Jackson had gutsy races and junior Jackson Hannon improved his time by a whopping 50 seconds from last year. Claire Edgley was the sole runner for the JV girls' team and finished the race in a time of 17:50 with a speedy kick. The varsity relay team consisted of Nathan Zick-Smith, Alexander Edgley, Chris Sundquist, Brooks Hall, and Taylor Hollen. Nathan conquered the course in a time of 12:11, only one second off of the Rowland Hall school record. The varsity runners were all pleased with their first race of the season and relieved that no one dropped the baton!
Our second meet was the BYU Invitational on September 6th. This was also a stacked meet with 2A through 5A schools competing on the Provo campus. Sam Jackson was the fasted among the JV boys team finishing the 5k course in a time of 23:24. Derek Devine and Ben Friedman turned in speedy times, even after having a small starting mishap. Claire Edgley and Christine Livsey represented the JV girls' in strong fashion, running times of 30:46 and 31:50 respectively. Nathan Zick-Smith once again led the varsity team with a time of 19:48 and Alex Edgley quickly followed in 20:04. Freshman standouts Andy and Johnny Gilbert ran well in their first varsity race while Taylor Hollen, Brooks Hall, and Topher Jones all finished in breakneck speed.
With three meets out of the way, the Rowland Hall harriers are now focused on having strong performances through the rest of September at the Wahsatch Rendezvous (Saturday the 20th) and the Judge Memorial Invitational (Saturday the 27th) before heading into the final stretch in October. Please come out and cheer on our dedicated, hard-working and speedy runners!

BYU/SLCC High School Prospect Fall Baseball League
Rowland Hall junior Corbin Christensen and sophomore Stephen "Jimmy" McCarthy are playing in the elite BYU/SLCC High School Prospect Fall Baseball League. Both players are playing for the "Gray" team, with Christensen playing shortstop, and McCarthy catching and playing outfield. This is a very big deal for both players and Rowland Hall Baseball. "Corbin and Jimmy are both talented players and are getting a chance to compete with and against the top high school talent in the state. This experience is second to none, and I'm glad they've been given this opportunity," said Head Baseball Coach Ben Voegele.
The league runs through October 8th and plays its games on Tuesday and Wednesday nights rotating between the baseball field at BYU and Salt Lake Community College.
Rowland Hall Baseball Fall open gyms will begin in the next few weeks. All players (grades 8-12) interested in playing this spring should plan on attending. The varsity/JV Rowland Hall Baseball season will officially begin in late February 2009. |

The Girls' Tennis team jumped out of the gates quickly and performed well early in the season! The strong singles play from Blake Harries, Jenn Livermore, and Maddie Loughridge has led the team to tight victories over Highland and Manti. Believe it or not, we are already gearing up for the Region and State tournaments on September 26th and October 4th respectively. The varsity doubles positions are still up in the air and the even level of ability means that everybody on the squad has a shot at making the top 7 players.
Come and support your team today, September 18th at Coach Mike's Tennis Academy as we take on our region rival South Summit. Go Winged Lions!
